Whether your family has been practicing catechism for years or is among the many households that have only recently discovered the valuable role it plays in Christian training, we think you'll find the Heritage Home Catechism Kit to be a wonderful resource.

The Heritage Home Catechism Kit utilizes the Westminster Shorter Catechism, and is designed to make the process of catechizing your children (or yourself) simple, convenient, and systematic. Each set includes 109 flashcards, 4 audio CDs, and a cedar storage box.

Flashcards:
The front of each 4" x 6" flashcard features a question from the Westminster Shorter Catechism written in large, bold print. The back shows the question, the answer, and the scriptural proofs for the answer. This format allows the parent to read along and check the student's answer as he responds to the question. The flashcard set contains the 107 questions of the catechism, The Ten Commandments, The Lord's Prayer, and The Apostle's Creed.

Memorization CDs:
Two Memorization CDs are included in the kit. They feature an audio recording of each question immediately followed by the answer. Memorization tracks are a good choice for use when familiarizing the student with new questions or for casual review or reflection (while driving, for example).

Practice CDs:
The kit also contains two Practice CDs. Each Practice track begins with a recording of the question, followed by a pause which is sufficiently long to allow recitation of the entire answer. The question is then repeated with the answer following immediately thereafter.

Storage Box:
Each Heritage Home Catechism Kit comes packaged in a custom designed, limited edition storage box. Crafted of *rustic cedar, this box features the engraved Heritage Home logo. Aromatic cedar chests have long been used to preserve and protect family treasures. We can't imagine a more appropriate way to store these materials.

*Please note...these boxes are not finished to furniture quality. You may find imperfections such as rough edges, knots, chips, variations in color, and so forth. Such things are part of the character of the wood, and we think you'll agree they are in keeping with the rustic charm of the box.

How to use the
Heritage Home Catechism Kit

The Heritage Home Catechism Kit does not represent a complex or innovative system for learning the catechism. Rather, it is a simple set of tools designed to make the tried and true read/listen/repeat method as convenient as possible.

The key to retaining memorized information is ongoing review. Reciting each previously learned question and answer every day is effective, but at some point it becomes impractical. For a method that's both effective and manageable, we recommend the following:

1. Introduce each new question by reading it aloud (or listening to the Memorization track), reading through the scriptural proofs, and discussing the implications of the question. G.I. Williamson's study guide for The Westminster Shorter Catechism is an excellent resource for this. Many families find that the Lord's Day afternoon is a good time to go over new catechism questions. After this initial teaching, move the flashcard for the question to the front of the box, where it will stay until the question is mastered.

2. Have the student spend a few minutes listening to the Memorization track for the new question at least twice a day, reading along on the flashcard if desired. (The "Repeat" function on the CD player can be useful for this.) Later in the day, a parent should use the flashcard to drill the student on the question. His response will most likely be halting at first, and it can be difficult to tell whether the next word is on the tip of his tongue or if he's truly lost. For this reason, you might wish to come up with some sort of "I need a hint" signal--perhaps a head nod or hand motion.

3. As he makes progress with the question, he should begin using the Practice track instead of the Memorization track. In effect, the student will be drilling himself with the CD, but will still have the advantage of hearing the correct recorded response after he gives his own.

4. Arrange the flashcards in the following order: current question in the very front of the box, previously learned review questions directly behind the current card, followed by the colored index card, which is used to separate the review questions from the untaught ones.

5. The current card is studied and recited daily (see above). Each day the student should also recite 2-5 previously learned questions. These flashcards are then moved to the back of the review section, and the next questions in the rotation are reviewed the next day. This constant, methodical recycling of flashcards ensures that none are abandoned and forgotten. If the student struggles with a review question, have him use the Practice track to refresh his recollection.
